The machine jams all the time when I try and backstich and even when I'm doing a simple stitch. It has such a complicated process on how to thread the machine and how to thread the bobbin. The instructions aren't written well at all. I don't recommend this product, you get what you pay for.

I have only some sewing experience, and this is my first machine. I have had my singer for about a month, and so far so good. Very easy to use, though it took some practice to learn to thread both top and bottom properly. The directions were pretty basic, but there were plenty of videos on YouTube that helped. This machine is solidly constructed and easy to use for basic sewing needs. I have zero complaints about this machine and I have been having a lot of fun becoming a more proficient seamstress. Highly recommended for a beginner!

I haven't sewn in a while and this machine has helped me to get back in the groove of sewing, the only problem that I have is that I can't use heavy thread on the machine so that has slowed me down some, but other than that it is a great machine for beginners. I will up grade the machine and pass this one on to my daughter so that she will become a great sewer in time. I am going to make my daughters wedding dress for her wedding and the flower girl dress this will be fun and very interesting
Great for Beginners!

I have sewn before, but this machine is great. It is some simple and the directions were easy to follow when I went to set it up. The only problem that I had was that the thread sometimes gets jumbled up and stuck so I have to re-thread it. It's really no big deal to me. But its something I thought I would point out. I also like the fact that it is same and very portable. Its definitely not a machine for someone who is doing bigger projects.

I have just begun to learn how to sew and this sewing machine is very easy to use and great for a first timer like me. So far I have made my 3month old daughter her very first baby blanket! She loves it and so I!

This machine was a gift to my granddaughter who wanted to learn to sew. The first thing I noticed it was pretty easy to set up and quiet. She is 11 and it didn't scare her at all. She loved seeing the different stitches she could use and by far the zigzag is her favorite. First project was a pillow and she did a great job. No problems at all. Just wish it had the little edger thing that would make it easier to keep the material straight. I have recommended this machine to a few of my first time sewing friends.
Great Product

This sewing machine is very easy to use. It is great for beginner or someone that just want to make simple things. The one bad thing is that you have to undo a screw just to get the the light bulb. Most of the other sewing machines I have used has a hing so you can get to the bulb much easier.

It does what its suppose to do. Its a great machine for a design student who need to get there homework done at home.

I haven't sew anything since I was in my early 20s, yet this year I decided to add textile work to my self-employed business (already includes photography). I couldn't afford an expensive machine; just wanted something that did the basics and a little more. This Promise 1409 machine from Singer has been a great choice for me. The bobbin loading and machine threading instructions are quite easy to follow. The machine has only jammed when it was my mistake. I would definitely recommend this machine for beginner/starting again sewers.
Great product for price
Overall Rating:
Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use, Included Accessories
Cons: Few Stitch Patterns
I am a beginner and this machine is perfect for me. I somewhat wish I would have purchased the promise, simply for more stitch patterns but other than that, I would recommend this to any beginner or expert who just enjoys sewing. I do seem to have a problem with the top thread pulling lose when I first begin stitching, but I may not be pulling enough thread out to start with. Seems like I do have to waste about 8 inches or the top thread will pull out. May just be me? Other than that, the machine has only jammed because of thread being bunched underneath my working fabric.

Its great so far, works really well. I'll update this as soon as I figure out what I'm doing wrong. I seem to be having trouble with loading the bobbin. Can't really understand that part of the manual. I like the machine thought. I've never used a machine before and it's really quiet. Great for me, and will probably be easier to use when I figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Pretty sweet little machine!

Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use
Cons: Very Few Options For Presser Feet.
This machine does pretty much everything I need it to do. It has jammed a couple of times, but my husband was able to fix it. I don't really need a lot of fancy stitches, so it works great for my little business. The only thing I dislike is that there is no option to purchase a Walking Foot for it, which would really help me when working with some of the slippery fabrics I use. I didn't know much about sewing machines when my husband bought it for me at Christmas, so now that I know more and would like that presser foot, I can't use it. So that sucks. Perhaps I'll have to upgrade someday, but I'll just suffer through and do my best in the meantime.
